Supreme Court Restores Trump Administration’s Voter Verification Database

The US Supreme Court has cleared the way for the Trump administration to use an expanded federal database to help states check the citizenship status of people on voter rolls ahead of the November midterm elections.

The court’s Friday order temporarily lifted restrictions that had blocked the administration from using the modified Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system for bulk citizenship checks.

The Department of Homeland Security expanded SAVE in 2025 by incorporating citizenship information from Social Security records and allowing states to conduct bulk searches using data including Social Security numbers.

Database Faces Privacy And Accuracy Challenges

The administration says the system can help identify people who are not eligible to vote. Critics, however, have argued that the database contains sensitive personal information and can produce inaccurate results, potentially affecting eligible voters.

A federal judge in June ruled that the modified system violated federal privacy and administrative laws and ordered its use halted. The administration appealed the decision and asked the Supreme Court to intervene.

The Supreme Court’s latest action allows the system to be used while the broader legal challenge continues. It does not represent a final ruling on whether the changes to SAVE are lawful.

The decision comes less than two months before the November midterm elections, when control of both chambers of Congress will be contested.
