The Kano State Government has suspended all Durbar processions and horse-riding activities in the Kano metropolis over fears of possible clashes and a breakdown of law and order.

The suspension followed an emergency meeting of the State Security Council held at the Government House, Kano, where the security situation surrounding the planned activities was reviewed.

The government said security assessments showed significant mobilisation of supporters in connection with the planned activities, raising concerns about possible confrontations, loss of lives and destruction of property.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, the government said the restriction would remain in force until further notice.

The statement read in part, “The State Security Council resolved to take precautionary measures to prevent any possible confrontation, preserve public order, and avoid any potential loss of lives or damage to property.”

The council consequently directed all relevant security agencies to enforce the restriction and take appropriate lawful action against anyone found violating the directive.

The government warned that anyone engaging in conduct capable of threatening public peace and security would face lawful action.

It explained that the decision was taken in line with the state government’s constitutional responsibility to safeguard lives and property and maintain peace and public order.
