Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting measures aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security, promoting economic growth and improving the living conditions of citizens.
Barau stated this in his message to Nigerians to mark the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, urging citizens to renew their faith in Nigeria and remain committed to building a stronger, more prosperous and secure nation.
In a statement issued to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Barau called on Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s journey since independence and uphold the ideals of unity, peace, justice, tolerance and development.
He said the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers and others who contributed to the country’s independence should continue to inspire citizens to work for national progress and prosperity.
“Fellow Nigerians, I warmly felicitate with you on the occasion of our 66th Independence Anniversary.
“As we celebrate this important milestone in the life of our beloved country, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we must remember the enormous sacrifices made by our founding fathers and all those who contributed to the struggle for Nigeria’s independence and the building of our nation.
“Their contributions remind us of the ideals that must continue to guide us as a people: national unity, peace, justice, tolerance and a shared commitment to the progress and prosperity of Nigeria,” he said.
The Deputy Senate President acknowledged the progress recorded by Nigeria over the past 66 years, while noting that the country still faces significant challenges.
He expressed confidence that unity of purpose, resilience and collective commitment would enable Nigeria to overcome its difficulties and emerge stronger.
“After 66 years of independence, our country has made significant progress, even as we continue to confront challenges. With unity of purpose, resilience and faith in our collective capacity, Nigeria will overcome its present difficulties and emerge stronger,” Barau said.
He also urged Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in implementing policies and programmes under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“With the cooperation of Nigerians, we will build a stronger, more prosperous and more secure nation. This is a time to remain hopeful and committed to the task of nation-building. We must all play our part in building the Nigeria we desire,” he added.
Barau, who is also the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, said the National Assembly would continue to provide the legislative framework necessary to address the country’s economic, security and developmental challenges.
He particularly highlighted the State Police Bill currently before state Houses of Assembly, saying its passage by the state legislatures and subsequent assent by the President would strengthen internal security and help address security challenges in parts of the country.
“We will continue to work with the Executive, within the framework of the Constitution, to provide the necessary legislative support for policies and programmes that promote economic growth, security, development and improved living conditions for Nigerians,” he said.
The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
Barau wished Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Independence celebration, while urging citizens to remain committed to the task of nation-building.
