The Rivers State govervment has said it cancelled the 66th Independence Day parade in the state in line with the decision of the federal government.
The Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Dagogo Wokoma, disclosed in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday evening.
The statement reads, “As Nigeria commemorates her 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2026, the Rivers State Government felicitates with the good people of Rivers State and Nigerians at home and abroad on this significant national occasion.
“In line with the approach adopted by the federal government for this year’s national celebration, the State Government has decided that there will be no Independence Day parade in Rivers State.
“The anniversary will instead be observed in a modest and purposeful manner, reflecting the solemnity of the occasion and the shared responsibility of building a stronger Nigeria.
“The government encourages Rivers people to mark the day with patriotism, reflection and renewed commitment to peace, unity and progress.”
