WhatsApp has introduced new parental controls for teenage accounts, allowing parents and guardians to place restrictions on privacy settings, group participation, Channels, Status and the platform’s Meta AI feature.
The new controls, announced by WhatsApp on Wednesday, are designed to give parents greater oversight of teenagers’ activities on the messaging platform without giving them access to their private conversations.
Under the new arrangement, parents can determine who can see a teenager’s profile photo, who can add the teenager to groups and other privacy settings. If a teenager attempts to relax any of the restrictions, parental approval through a parent-set PIN will be required.
WhatsApp said parents would also receive notifications about certain account activities, including when their teenager joins or leaves a group, while alerts can also be triggered when a group in which the teenager participates grows significantly.
The controls extend to WhatsApp Channels and Status, with parents able to determine which Status updates their teenager can view and who can see the teenager’s own Status updates.
The company has also introduced controls for Meta AI, allowing parents to choose between the standard 13-plus experience and a more restrictive “Limited Content” option for their teenagers.
According to WhatsApp, the parental controls are optional and can be adjusted or switched off by parents. The company said they are intended to support conversations between parents and teenagers about responsible use of the platform rather than provide parents with unrestricted access to their children’s communications.
A key limitation of the new controls is that parents cannot read their teenagers’ private messages or listen to their calls through the parental-control system.
WhatsApp said personal messages and calls would continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption even when parental controls are activated, meaning the content remains inaccessible to people outside the conversation, including WhatsApp.
The development comes as technology platforms face increasing pressure to provide stronger safeguards for children and teenagers using online services.
WhatsApp has been expanding its child-safety measures this year. The platform previously introduced parent-managed accounts for younger users, allowing parents to have greater control over contacts, groups, privacy settings and activity alerts while maintaining encryption of personal communications.
The distinction between the two systems is that the latest controls are aimed at teenagers, while parent-managed accounts are designed for younger users and provide a more restricted WhatsApp experience.
WhatsApp said the new teen controls would be developed further based on feedback from families and would be rolled out gradually. Its parental-controls information page also cautions that the features may not yet be available in every region.
For Nigerian parents, the development could become relevant as WhatsApp remains widely used for communication among families, schools, social groups and businesses. However, availability of the new controls in Nigeria will depend on the company’s rollout schedule.
Also, the introduction of the controls highlights the balance between parental oversight and teenagers’ privacy, with WhatsApp maintaining that its approach should allow parents to monitor selected activities and account settings without gaining access to the actual contents of private conversations.
Additionally, the company said parents could use the controls to guide teenagers’ use of the platform while continuing to have discussions with them about privacy, online interactions and responsible digital behaviour.
