Andre Szmyt made a 56-yard field goal with 10 seconds left, giving the Cleveland Browns a 27-24 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers at Huntington Bank Field.
The kick was the longest of Szmyt’s career, and safety Grant Delpit ended Pittsburgh’s final chance with an interception. Cleveland has now won three games in a row.
The Browns held a 21-10 lead after three quarters, but the Steelers rallied. Aaron Rodgers connected with tight end Pat Freiermuth for a touchdown and then added a two-point conversion, tying the game with 1:42 remaining.
Deshaun Watson, who was booed by some Browns fans during the preseason, answered by leading Cleveland 36 yards in seven plays to set up Szmyt’s winning kick.
Pittsburgh started strong and led 7-0 after the first quarter on a Roman Wilson touchdown. Cleveland took over in the second quarter, scoring on rushing touchdowns by Jaleel McLaughlin and Quinshon Judkins and a touchdown catch by Harold Fannin Jr. Chris Boswell kicked a field goal for Pittsburgh, and the Browns led by 11 at halftime.
Neither team scored in the third quarter. Darnell Washington’s touchdown brought the Steelers closer, and a 44-yard field goal by Szmyt gave Cleveland some cushion before Rodgers found Freiermuth to set up the dramatic finish.
Rodgers was sacked five times and intercepted twice. With the victory, the Browns moved into first place in the AFC North for the first time since November 2014. The Steelers fell to 2-2 and remain at the bottom of the division.
