The African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has said he would withdraw from the 2027 presidential race and campaign for President Bola Tinubu if petrol sells for ₦600 per litre from tomorrow.

Amaechi made the statement on Friday during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television, while responding

to claims by the Tinubu administration that Nigerians were entering an era of prosperity.

He questioned whether the economic changes announced by the Federal Government had translated into lower costs for ordinary Nigerians, particularly transportation and fuel prices.

The former Rivers State governor challenged the government to demonstrate the impact of its policies on the daily lives of citizens.

According to him, despite the President’s Independence Day message and assurances that the country had turned the corner, Nigerians were yet to see a significant reduction in the cost of living.

Amaechi said he would personally visit a filling station the following morning to ascertain the prevailing petrol price rather than rely on information from his staff.

He said: “If fuel has come down to 600, I will campaign for President Tinubu. If fuel comes down tomorrow to 600, I will campaign for President Tinubu.”

He further challenged the television programme’s host to accompany him with a camera to a filling station to verify the price.

“Tomorrow, if you doubt, come with your camera in the morning to the house and I will go to the fuel station and I will buy fuel,” he said.

Amaechi added that if petrol actually sold for ₦600 per litre, he would not only support Tinubu but also relinquish his position on the ADC presidential ticket.

“If it comes down to this, I, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, will withdraw as the vice-presidential candidate of Atiku and campaign for President Tinubu if it has come down,” he stated.

Amaechi’s comments came amid continued debate over the impact of the Federal Government’s economic reforms, particularly fuel pricing and the removal of petrol subsidy.

The ADC candidate also questioned the administration’s claim that Nigerians were beginning to experience the benefits of its policies, pointing to transport costs as an indicator of the economic pressure faced by households.

He specifically referred to the cost of transportation from Nyanya to Abuja and from Ubima to Port Harcourt, asking whether fares had fallen as promised.

“Go to the person that goes by transport and ask how much it costs to move from Nyanya to Abuja. Has anything come down? Or Ubima to Port Harcourt? Has anything changed?” he asked.
