Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on families, communities, leaders and policymakers to intensify efforts to end child marriage and protect the rights of the girl child.
The first lady made the call in a message marking the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, observed on 11th October, with the theme “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights.”
She said every girl deserved the freedom to learn, grow and pursue her dreams without discrimination, violence or harmful practices limiting her future.
Tinubu urged stakeholders to prioritise the protection of girls’ rights and invest in their education, healthcare and general well-being.
According to her, creating an environment where girls can thrive would benefit not only individuals but also families, communities and the country at large.
“When girls thrive, families prosper, communities grow stronger, and nations advance,” she said.
The First Lady also stressed the importance of collective action in ensuring that girls are protected from harmful practices and given equal opportunities to fulfil their potential.
The International Day of the Girl Child is observed annually to promote the rights of girls, highlight the challenges they face and encourage action to improve their access to education, healthcare, protection and other opportunities.
