As part of measures to mitigate the effects of flood disaster on water and hygiene, a non-governmental organization, GOALprime Organisation Nigeria (GPON) has launched a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme in communities affected by flooding in Jakusko local government area of Yobe State.

Jakusko was among the councils in the state that was worst hit by the flood disaster in 2022 with several communities losing their means of livelihood including water facilities.

The Northeast WASH officer of the organisation, Mr. Usman Saidu, who spoke to the benefiting communities in Gasmu of Jakusko local government, said the project funded by the Nigerian Humanitarian Fund (NHF) was meant to intensify lifesaving and mitigate the risk of waterborne diseases.

He said, “We are here as part of our mandate to intensify lifesaving through WASH assistance to mitigate the risk of waterborne diseases and enhancing emergency rehabilitation assistance of WASH facilities and services damaged by flooding in Jakusko local government area of Yobe State.

“Through this project, GOALprime will provide the following WASH services, rehabilitation and optimization of non-functional boreholes, water quality test for chemicals and bacteriological analysis, water points chlorination and FRC monitoring, door to door hygiene promotion sensitisation and mass speaker campaign sensitisation.
