Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has commended the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for his professionalism and commitment to duty while serving as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State during a period of political crisis.
Fubara gave the commendation on Tuesday at Government House, Port Harcourt, when Disu, accompanied by senior police officers, including Commissioners of Police from Rivers, Bayelsa and the Eastern Port Command, as well as heads of sister security agencies, paid him a courtesy visit.
The governor expressed delight at IGP’s elevation, recalling how he discharged his responsibilities despite the difficult circumstances at the time.
“While he was here as a Commissioner, he was here at the peak of crisis. But I can tell you that he did his work, not minding the situation. He tried as much as he could to balance all the areas,” he said.
Fubara said Disu’s performance in Rivers State demonstrated the value of professionalism and earned him recognition, describing his return as Inspector-General of Police as a moment of pride.
The governor said: “I feel very happy that somebody who left here in a very difficult situation, in a very trying time, did wonderfully well, is here today visiting us in a higher capacity.”
He also wished the IGP success in addressing the country’s security challenges, particularly with the 2027 general elections approaching.
Fubara expressed confidence that Disu would overcome the challenges ahead and prayed for greater success in his new position.
Earlier, IGP Olatunji Disu said his visit combined attendance at the book launch of retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Dame Stella Obuoforibo Okuyiga (formerly Opuiyo), with an opportunity to return to Rivers State, where he previously served as Commissioner of Police.
He said Dame Okuyiga (formerly Opuiyo) was among the first 20 women to join the Nigeria Police Force, describing her as an important figure in the history of the police and Rivers State.
“I’m here in this wonderful state, this wonderful city today to attend the launching of a book presented by
Dame Stella Obuoforibo Okuyiga, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, who was among the first set of 20 women to join the Nigerian Police Force.”
The IGP also thanked the Governor and the people of Rivers State for their cooperation and support during his previous assignment.
He noted that effective policing requires collaboration with the state government and other security agencies.
“Without the cooperation of the state government, without the cooperation of the Governor, the job of policing will be very, very difficult.”
IGP Disu expressed appreciation for the assistance given to the police and other security agencies, saying the support contributed to maintaining peace in the state.
In September 2026, the memoirs of Dame Stella Obuoforibo Okuyiga (formerly Opuiyo), titled “Origin of Policewomen in Nigeria and My Journey in the Nigeria Police Force (1955–1986)”, were officially published, capturing her trailblazing career as one of Nigeria’s first 20 pioneering female police officers.
