The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has confirmed the killing of one of its personnel, Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I (ASI I) Ibrahim Usman Babagiwa, as bandits launched fresh attacks in Niger State, killing four villagers and setting a market ablaze.
The Niger State Command Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Immigration I (DSI I) Mohammed Abubakar, confirmed the killing of the officer.
He said Babagiwa and an Inspector of Immigration were on a surveillance operation along the Tungan Taya–Woko axis when they came under attack by bandits.
Abubakar said further details of the incident would be released later.
However, it was learnt that the inspector sustained machete injuries but managed to escape, while Babagiwa was killed and his body set ablaze.
In a separate attack in Mashegu Local Government Area, which shares a boundary with Borgu Local Government Area, four villagers were killed and a market set ablaze after residents allegedly refused to pay levies imposed by the bandits before harvesting their crops.
A villager, Mohammed Aliyu, who confirmed the incident to LEADERSHIP by telephone, said the entire community had been deserted following the attack.
He added that the market was burnt to ashes as the bandits operated freely.
Details later…
