The Association of Resident Doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has suspended its three-day warning strike and directed members to resume duty.
The association announced the suspension in a memo issued to members jointly signed by the association’s President, Dr Uthman Adedeji, and General Secretary, Dr Mary Awodiji.
“Sequel to the resolutions of the Emergency General Meeting (EGM), held on Thursday, Oct. 8, members are hereby informed that the three-day warning strike has been completed.
“Consequently, work resumes today, Thursday, Oct. 15, by 8.00 a.m,” the memo stated.
The association urged all members to promptly return to their respective duty posts, adding that updates would be communicated to the congress within stipulated timelines in the coming days.
The resident doctors embarked on the three-day warning strike on Monday over persistent electricity supply problems and chronic water shortages around the College of Medicine axis of the hospital.
Their demands include the immediate restoration of electricity to the affected area, urgent repairs to all faulty circuit breakers to provide backup power, and uninterrupted electricity supply to every part of the hospital.
The association also issued a seven-day ultimatum to the UCH management, running from October 12 to October 19, warning that it might embark on an indefinite strike if its demands were not met.
The suspension of the warning strike comes amid concerns over the impact of the electricity and water shortages on healthcare delivery at the hospital.
