Global oil prices climbed towards $110 per barrel on Friday, reaching their highest levels since May, as Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure and rising tensions in the Middle East heightened fears over global petroleum supplies.

Brent crude futures reached $109.86 per barrel during the session, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) closed at $101.41 per barrel.

The rally reflects growing concerns about the reliability of international oil supplies and the ability of producers to maintain deliveries through major transportation routes.

The renewed attacks on Russian energy infrastructure have raised questions about the country’s refining capacity and its ability to sustain petroleum product exports, adding to existing concerns over supply disruptions in the Middle East.

The latest price increase has also been driven by developments around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for Middle Eastern crude oil and petroleum product shipments, where attacks on commercial vessels have complicated regional exports.

Saudi Arabia also reported intercepting a ballistic missile directed towards the Red Sea port of Yanbu, although authorities said the incident caused no damage.

The developments come as governments pursue measures to improve fuel availability, including emergency petroleum reserve releases and changes to restrictions affecting certain Russian diesel shipments.

For energy companies, rising crude prices have different financial implications across the industry, particularly for exploration and production firms, refiners and transportation operators.

Higher oil prices generally boost revenue and operating cash flow for exploration and production companies. Producers with established operations, manageable operating costs and limited exposure to hedging arrangements may benefit most directly from sustained price increases.

However, higher commodity prices do not automatically translate into increased capital spending. Companies must assess whether the rally is likely to last before committing additional funds to drilling programmes, acquisitions or infrastructure expansion.

For refiners, rising crude acquisition costs present a different financial challenge. Their profitability depends on whether prices for petrol, diesel and other refined products rise sufficiently to offset the increased cost of crude oil.

Refineries with reliable operations and access to competitively priced crude may be better positioned to manage pressure on their profit margins.

Midstream companies and export terminal operators could also experience changes in demand as international buyers adjust their crude sourcing and transportation arrangements.

Although higher oil prices may support activity in producing regions, elevated freight rates and shipping insurance costs can make deliveries to distant markets more expensive and less competitive.

For investors, the sustainability of the rally is more important than any single price milestone.

A prolonged period of higher crude prices could strengthen producers’ balance sheets, support shareholder distributions and improve the economics of selected development projects.

However, an improvement in regional security or the restoration of normal transportation routes could reduce the geopolitical premium built into current prices.

Market participants are expected to monitor petroleum flows through the Strait of Hormuz, Russian refinery operations, US crude inventories, tanker freight rates and changes in refining margins.

Oil’s advance towards $110 per barrel highlights how geopolitical tensions involving Ukraine and the Middle East can affect energy markets, creating financial opportunities for some companies while increasing operating costs and supply risks for others.
