The Abuja Original Inhabitant Youth Empowerment Organization (AOIYEO) has condemned the clash between indigenes of Paiko community and members of the Fulani community in Gwagwalada area council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which reportedly led to loss of lives.
The organisation, in a statement signed by its executive director, Commandant Isaac David, on Sunday, expressed sadness over the incident, particularly the reported deaths of indigenous youths from Paiko.
David commiserated with the families of those killed, describing the incident as tragic and avoidable.
“No family should have to bury their child because of a conflict that could have been avoided through dialogue,” he said.
While condemning violence from all sides, AOIYEO appealed to youths and residents of Paiko and other parts of Gwagwalada Area Council to remain calm and refrain from retaliation.
The organisation warned that taking the law into their own hands could further escalate the situation and undermine peace across the FCT’s 858 Original Inhabitant communities.
AOIYEO also commended the chairman of Gwagwalada area council, Kasim Mohammed, for his swift intervention, including the deployment of security personnel and his efforts to facilitate dialogue between the affected communities.
The group urged security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that those found culpable are brought to justice through lawful means.
It also appealed to traditional rulers, Sarkin Noma and youth leaders from both communities to participate in the enlarged security meeting convened by the council chairman as part of efforts to restore peace.
Farmers and herders were equally urged to respect each other’s means of livelihood and channel grievances through the appropriate authorities rather than resorting to self-help.
The organisation said peace remained critical to the survival and development of communities in the FCT, stressing that insecurity would undermine farming, economic activities and the future of young people.
It further urged residents of Paiko to cooperate with security personnel deployed to the area and comply with the temporary restriction of movement imposed as part of measures to restore normalcy.
“Peace is the only foundation for development. Without peace, there can be no farming, no development and no future for our children,” AOIYEO said.
The organisation prayed for the repose of the souls of those killed and for God to grant their families the strength to bear the loss.
