Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has said the country is receiving the proposed United Nations budget for presentation to the Nigerian president for the first time in 66 years.
Ibrahim disclosed this on Sunday after presenting the seven-volume proposed UN budget for 2027 to President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He explained that the budget was presented to Nigeria because of its membership of the United Nations and his role in the UN General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, which considers budgetary matters.
According to him, the proposed budget was submitted to the Fifth Committee by the UN Secretary-General before being brought to Nigeria for presentation to the President.
Ibrahim described the presentation as a historic development, noting that it was the first time in 66 years that Nigeria had undertaken such a role.
He said: “It’s the first time in 66 years that Nigeria will share budget and amateur committee. The first time, so we don’t know when we’re going to do that again in history.”
The ambassador said the presentation of the seven volumes to Tinubu marked an important moment for Nigeria, adding that the President had made history by receiving the proposed UN budget.
Ibrahim disclosed that the budget covered the organisation’s regular operations and peacekeeping activities.
He put the proposed regular budget at about $3.4 billion and the peacekeeping budget at approximately $8.5 billion.
He estimated the total UN budget at about $14 billion, equivalent to between ₦36 trillion and ₦40 trillion.
Expressing satisfaction with the presentation, Ibrahim said he was pleased that the President had received all seven volumes of the proposed budget.
