A Yobe State High Court sitting in Damaturu has sentenced a 45-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, popularly known as Daddy, to death by hanging for the killing of his wife, Ammi Adamu Mamman.
Musa was arrested by operatives of the Yobe State Police Command on 4 January 2024, following the death of his 42-year-old wife at their residence in New Bra-Bra Housing Estate, Damaturu.
He was subsequently charged with culpable homicide. According to the police, Musa reported the incident, claiming that he discovered his wife had been stabbed in the neck while they were sleeping on the same bed.
He reportedly told the police that he heard his wife shouting and, upon waking up, found her with a stab wound to the neck and bleeding heavily.
The police account further stated that Musa claimed to have seen a man holding a knife. He allegedly said that when he confronted the man, two other persons came to the suspect’s aid and helped him escape.
However, after hearing the case, the Chief Judge of the Yobe State High Court No. 1, Justice G.K. Kaigama, found Musa guilty of culpable homicide.
The court delivered its judgment on Wednesday after hearing testimony from eight prosecution witnesses. Justice Kaigama rejected Musa’s plea of not guilty, holding that the prosecution had established all the essential elements of culpable homicide and proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
In his defence, Musa, through his lawyers, maintained that other persons had killed his wife after breaking into their home.
Justice Kaigama said the convict had the right to appeal the judgment within 30 days, in accordance with the applicable law.
