The management of Jos Electricity Distribution (JED) Company has condemned the invasion and abduction of 10 of its staff members by over 50 youths from the Makurdi office, the Benue State capital.
LEADERSHIP Friday gathered that the rampaging youths also made away with four of their operational vehicles and various technical working tools.
JED, in a statement issued in Jos by the company’s head of Corporate Communications, Saratu Aliyu Dauda, explained that the unfortunate incident occurred when about 50 persons forcibly gained access to the office and confronted the
JED state management team over operational and administrative concerns.
According to the statement, the youths allegedly sent by the state government forced their way into the office, assaulted and molested members of staff on the spot.
“They abducted 10 personnel, took out four vehicles and various technical working tools.”
She disclosed that the affected personnel and properties were released at about 5:45 p.m., following the forceful reconnection of the transformer.
“Unfortunately, the incident also created serious injuries to several other members of staff. A similar incident was reported on 3rd September, 2026, when a team of JED staff on a routine check was held hostage at the Government House following the detection of a meter bypass on the premises.”
According to the statement, staff members were forced to reconnect the bypassed meter before being released from the facility, adding that this issue has persisted and remains unresolved despite several communication efforts with officials of the State Government.
“The latest incident has been escalated to the relevant security agencies and we will continue to cooperate with them in establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident to prevent a recurrence.”
She insisted that JED recognises the importance of addressing stakeholders’ concerns and maintaining cordial relationships with government institutions and host communities; it firmly believes that such matters are best resolved through dialogue and mutual understanding.
The statement further said it has developed institutional procedures and reiterates that technical interventions, including the energisation of transformers and the handling of metering irregularities, must be guided by applicable regulatory requirements and safety standards.
“JED Plc remains committed to constructive engagement with the Benue State Government and other relevant stakeholders to address concerns amicably and in the overall interest of electricity consumers and the people.”
