Ten corporate teams will compete for honours when the third edition of the Corporate Stars League kicks off on Saturday, 24 October, with defending champions Norrenberger seeking to retain their title.
The competition, which will run for five weekends, will feature organisations from the financial, telecommunications, energy, hospitality and public sectors, providing an opportunity for employees to compete in football while fostering networking among participating organisations.
New challengers will be hoping to dethrone Norrenberger, whose representative, Victor Olamide Mattews, said the champions were prepared to defend their crown.
Mattews expressed confidence in his team’s ability to withstand the challenge from their rivals, insisting that the reigning champions would not relinquish their title without a fight.
Telecommunications company MTN will also be seeking a stronger showing after falling short in the previous edition.
Its representative, Abubakar Bako, said the team was returning with renewed determination to improve its performance and make a greater impact on the competition.
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) is another participant expected to test its strength against the other corporate sides, while the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PI-CNG & EV) will make its debut.
David Idakwo, who represents PI-CNG & EV, said the organisation was ready to learn from the experience while challenging the more established teams.
The Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) will also be aiming to translate its financial discipline into performances on the pitch.
Its representative, Hassan Haruna, said the organisation hoped to demonstrate tactical awareness, sound decision-making and a winning mentality throughout the competition.
Other participating organisations include the Nigeria Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Jaiz Bank and hospitality brand Beer and Barn.
The participation of organisations from different sectors has generated friendly rivalry ahead of the tournament, with representatives exchanging banter over issues ranging from infrastructure and power supply to pensions, investments and corporate performance.
However, the teams will have to settle their differences on the pitch when the competition begins, with teamwork, tactical discipline and finishing expected to play key roles in determining the eventual winners.
Speaking after the draws and unveiling of the participating teams, 5Stars Operations Manager, Misal Dikko, said the third edition was expected to produce a more competitive contest, given the number of teams involved and the expectations of their respective managements.
“We are going to have an interesting competition, especially with the number of participating teams and the level of expectations from management. They have shown they are ready to put their money where their mouth is by supporting their teams with all the necessary logistics,” Dikko said.
The league is expected to combine competitive football with opportunities for networking and interaction among professionals from the participating organisations.
While Norrenberger will be seeking to consolidate its position as champions, the other nine teams will be aiming to claim the title when the five-weekend competition concludes.
