Mourinho’s Madrid Face Flick’s Barcelona With league Lead At Stake

The first El Clásico of the season at Spotify Camp Nou is as much a managerial collision as a title-race showdown. Hansi Flick’s Barcelona have won all nine La Liga matches and can move nine points clear of Real Madrid with victory,

while José Mourinho returns to the Clásico for the first time in 13 years knowing another away defeat would leave Madrid with an early mountain to climb.

Barcelona’s domestic perfection—nine wins from nine, 39 goals scored, and a chance at a historic 10th straight victory—has been built on aggressive possession and high full-backs. But the midweek 4-2 defeat at PSG exposed the space

between midfield and defence, exactly the zone Mourinho’s counter-attacking Madrid will target. Flick must also patch together a makeshift back line: Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen and Dani Olmo are out, while Jules Koundé is a major doubt, leaving João Cancelo, Pau Cubarsí, Gerard Martín and Xavi Espart as the likely defensive unit, with Rodri screening in midfield. Lamine Yamal and a fit-again Raphinha remain Barcelona’s main attacking threats.

Madrid arrive with momentum after scoring four in each of their last three games, with Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, Arda Güler and Yan Diomande in strong form. But Mourinho must cope without Vinícius Júnior, suspended domestically, as well as Ferland Mendy, Raúl Asencio and Rodrygo.

Madrid have not kept a clean sheet in their last 12 meetings with Barcelona and have yet to shut out an opponent away from home this season—a warning sign against Flick’s attack.

Barcelona’s domestic form and home record—23 consecutive La Liga home wins—make them clear favourites, and a win would put them in a commanding title position.
