Suspected political thugs on Wednesday attacked vehicles conveying supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, leaving several people with minor injuries and damaging vehicles.

The incident occurred as party supporters travelled to Funtua for the flag-off of Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda’s re-election campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The hoodlums, who were chanting “Ba mu yi,” a Hausa expression meaning “We do not agree,” reportedly hurled objects and stones at passing vehicles, shattering windscreens and windows and causing panic among motorists and passengers.

Our correspondent, who was travelling along the route, narrowly escaped the attack after a police officer directed the vehicle to stop temporarily as the hoodlums targeted other vehicles travelling along the road, including some in the governor’s convoy.

The timely intervention of the police prevented further exposure to the attack.

After the situation was brought under control, our correspondent observed that some victims had sustained minor injuries, while several vehicles had their windscreens and side windows shattered.

Police officers deployed along the route responded swiftly by firing tear gas to disperse the hoodlums and restore order, allowing motorists and party supporters to continue their journeys.

The incident temporarily disrupted movement along the road as security personnel worked to clear the affected section and prevent further attacks.

Despite the disturbance in Malumfashi, thousands of APC supporters converged on Funtua for the campaign flag-off, turning the venue into a sea of party colours.

The enthusiastic crowd, drawn from different parts of Katsina State, sang solidarity songs and chanted slogans in support of Governor Radda and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

Supporters waved APC flags and displayed campaign materials bearing the images of the governor and the president, expressing their determination to mobilise grassroots support for the party.

The massive turnout underscored the political significance of the event as the APC intensifies preparations for the forthcoming general elections.

However, the attack in Malumfashi raised fresh concerns about political intolerance and the safety of supporters travelling to campaign activities.

As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the attackers, their political affiliations and the motive behind the incident had not been independently established.

There was also no immediate confirmation of arrests or an official statement from the Katsina State Police Command regarding the incident.
