Veteran Ghanaian actor Majid Michel has stated that comparing Ghana’s film industry to Nigeria’s Nollywood is unfair and illogical, citing population size and structural development.
Speaking during an interview on Y1079 FM in Accra, Michel described comparisons between the two West African entertainment sectors as inappropriate, given the vast difference in their demographic scales.
“The comparison between us and Nigeria is such a stupid comparison to me. If you have 50 children and I have 5 children, the possibility that you will have more criminals, doctors, good children and filmmakers than me is very high,” Michel said.
He emphasised that Ghana’s population of under 40 million cannot be compared to Nigeria’s over 200 million, making it natural for Nigeria to produce more talent and films.
“We are less than 40 million in Ghana. Nigeria is over 200 million, almost 300 million. So how on earth would you compare? Mathematically, you should know why,” he added.
The actor also noted that comparing developing African institutions to older, long-established foreign nations is flawed because of differences in their systems of development and governance histories.
