The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has raised concerns over the reported conviction and imprisonment of a Christian woman in Borno State, North-East Nigeria.

In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association identified the woman as Lami Samuel Dawa and expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding her conviction.

CAN said it was particularly troubled by reports that the case stemmed from the conversion of an adult woman to Christianity, noting, however, that the precise facts and legal basis for the conviction were still being verified.

The association disclosed that an appeal had been filed, stressing that it would allow the judicial process to take its course.

However, it noted that the case raises serious concerns about the protection of religious freedom and the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

According to CAN, every individual has the right to freely choose, change or practise their religion or belief without coercion, intimidation or unlawful punishment.

The association urged relevant authorities to ensure that the rights of everyone involved are respected and that the matter is handled in accordance with the Constitution and applicable laws.

It added that it “will continue to monitor developments in the case and engage with the relevant authorities through appropriate legal and institutional channels.”

CAN reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence among Nigerians of different religious backgrounds and defending the fundamental rights and freedoms of every citizen.
