The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of mourners on Friday who were transporting a corpse from Kano to Benue for burial.
Speaking with LEADERSHIP on the telephone, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu, said the incident happened along Adoka Road in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.
Aondongu said security operatives were deployed to rescue the victims.
According to him,”Yes, I can confirm to you that mourners were abducted along Adoka Road in Otukpo Local Government Area last week Friday. Our men have been mobilised to the scene and they are working round the clock to rescue them unharmed” the police stated.
However, a security source told our correspondent earlier that suspected kidnappers abducted husband and five other mourners along Adoka Road in Otukpo local government area.
The mourners were said to be heading to Okpoga in the Okpokwu Local Government Area for the burial ceremony when gunmen intercepted the convoy and took them away to unknown location.
Another source said gunmen were demanding for N20 million ransom before releasing the victims, “The woman’s corpse was abandoned on the road. Security men on patrol saw the corpse on the road Saturday morning and took it to the police station and the body was deposited to the mortuary. What we heard is that they are demanding for N20 million before releasing them”
