Leadership is not merely about occupying an exalted position; it is about making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. As the popular saying goes, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. In governance, the true measure of leadership lies not in grand promises or political rhetoric but in tangible achievements, enduring legacies and the positive changes citizens experience in their daily lives. By this standard, the recognition of Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, as Leadership Newspaper Group’s 2026 Governor of the Year is a fitting acknowledgement of his administration’s commitment to purposeful governance and sustainable development.

The formal presentation of the award notification letter to Governor Idris in Abuja by the Group Managing Director of Leadership Newspapers, Mr Muazu Elazeh, followed an assessment by the newspaper’s Board of Editors of the Governor’s performance, policy direction and contributions to Kebbi State since assuming office in May 2023. The recognition is particularly significant because it reflects an independent assessment of his administration’s performance and the impact of its policies and programmes on the people.

Indeed, actions speak louder than words. One of the most visible expressions of Governor Idris’s leadership is the infrastructural transformation taking place across Kebbi State. Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, has witnessed remarkable improvements through township road construction, drainage systems, street lighting and other urban renewal initiatives. The newly constructed Bola Ahmed Tinubu Ultra-Modern Secretariat Complex and the modernised Central Motor Park, commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in February 2026, are among the notable landmarks that reflect the administration’s determination to modernise public infrastructure and stimulate economic activity.

Beyond the state capital, the administration has extended its development efforts to rural communities through road construction and rehabilitation projects. Interventions across Yauri, Argungu, Jega and other local government areas, including the Koko–Mahuta–Dabai Road project, demonstrate a commitment to addressing longstanding infrastructure challenges. The Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), with 300 kilometres of rural roads identified for construction, upgrading and maintenance, further underscores the importance attached to connecting farming communities to markets, healthcare facilities and other essential services.

Agriculture, being the backbone of Kebbi State’s economy and the livelihood of a significant proportion of its population, has remained a major priority of the administration. Through the distribution of fertilisers, improved seeds, agricultural equipment and other farm inputs, the government has continued to support farmers and strengthen food production. These interventions are not merely about increasing agricultural output; they are also about improving rural livelihoods, empowering farming households, creating economic opportunities and reinforcing Kebbi’s position as one of Nigeria’s leading agricultural states.

Perhaps one of the most enduring aspects of Governor Idris’s leadership is his commitment to human capital development. His administration’s free education policy, payment of tuition fees and stipends for Kebbi students studying in tertiary institutions within and outside the country, as well as support for WAEC examination fees, reflect a deliberate effort to remove financial barriers to education. The recruitment of thousands of teachers and healthcare personnel, alongside the renovation of schools and rehabilitation of hospitals, further demonstrates an understanding that the greatest investment any government can make is in the development and well-being of its people.

Healthcare delivery has equally received considerable attention. The rehabilitation of general hospitals and primary healthcare centres, the provision of medical equipment, the recruitment of healthcare personnel and support for health insurance schemes are among the interventions aimed at improving access to quality healthcare. These investments are particularly important in strengthening maternal and child healthcare, improving healthcare delivery in rural communities and ensuring that more citizens can access essential medical services.

Security has also remained central to the administration’s development agenda. Recognising that meaningful development cannot thrive without peace and stability, the government has continued to support security agencies and community vigilantes by providing operational vehicles, motorcycles and other logistics. These interventions are aimed at strengthening security operations, improving responses to threats, protecting lives and property, safeguarding farmlands and creating a more conducive environment for economic activities.

Beyond these sectoral achievements, Kebbi State has recorded another significant milestone in fiscal performance. The state ranked fifth among Nigerian states in BudgIT’s 2026 State of States Fiscal Performance Ranking, with a score of 58.81 points. Lagos led the ranking with 66.97 points, followed by Enugu with 65.45, Bayelsa with 64.30 and Delta with 60.66.

Kebbi’s fifth position is particularly noteworthy, considering that the state ranked ahead of several other states, including Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Edo, Bauchi, Taraba, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Borno and others. This performance reflects encouraging progress in fiscal management and financial administration. More importantly, it reinforces the importance of prudent resource management, financial discipline and responsible governance in building a state capable of meeting its development obligations.

For an administration that places considerable emphasis on infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture and workers’ welfare, such an external assessment provides an additional source of encouragement. Fiscal performance is not simply about figures and rankings; its real value lies in the government’s ability to manage available resources responsibly and translate them into meaningful improvements in citizens’ lives.

Equally worthy of recognition is Governor Idris’s personal disposition as a leader. His humility, compassion, accessibility and generosity have continued to define his relationship with the people. His interventions in the lives of individuals, groups, associations, students, workers and vulnerable members of society reflect a leadership philosophy that recognises the human side of governance. He understands that behind every government policy are real people with hopes, expectations and challenges.

As an African proverb reminds us, if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together. This aptly captures the importance of inclusiveness, consultation and collective responsibility in governance. Governor Idris’s emphasis on working with stakeholders, traditional institutions, community leaders and other partners reflects an understanding that sustainable development is a collective responsibility.

Ultimately, Leadership Newspaper Group’s 2026 Governor of the Year Award is more than a ceremonial recognition. It is an encouragement to sustain the progress already recorded and an invitation to accomplish even more. For Governor Nasir Idris, the honour represents another chapter in a journey defined by service, commitment and the determination to improve the lives of the people.

For the people of Kebbi State, the Governor of the Year recognition, alongside the state’s emergence as the fifth-best-performing state in BudgIT’s 2026 Fiscal Performance Ranking, represents a moment of collective pride. These recognitions reinforce the growing appreciation of the administration’s efforts and the importance of maintaining the momentum of development across the state.

For Kauran Gwandu, however, these achievements should not be seen as a destination but as further motivation to do more. The expectations of the people remain high, and the responsibilities of leadership demand continuous improvement, greater accountability and an unwavering commitment to public service.

Indeed, when leadership is measured by performance, compassion, accountability and the positive difference it makes in people’s lives, Governor Nasir Idris is a leader who, in the eyes of those who believe in his vision and leadership, perfectly fits the bill.
