Senator Joel Danlami Ikenya has again emerged as the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Taraba State after a fresh primary election.

The primary election followed the Federal High Court’s ruling in Jalingo’ ruling on February 4, 2023 that a fresh Labour Party governorship primary election be conducted within 10 days in Taraba State.

The fresh exercise was conducted on Saturday, February 11 at the premises of the Labour Party secretariat in Jalingo.

Delegates for the primary election were drawn from all the 16 local government areas of the state and the two special development areas of Yangtu and Ngada. Of the 90 delegates expected to participate in the primary election, 83 were accredited and participated in the voting.

Announcing the result after counting of the ballots, the returning officer of the primary election, who was appointed by the national office of the party, Mr. Herbert Alexander, declared that 82 votes were cast for Senator Joel Danlami Ikenya, while one vote was invalid.

The other contestant, Evangelist Philip Munlip got no vote.

Alexander commended the delegates and party members in the state for their peaceful conduct during the primary election.

Also speaking at the end of the exercise, the Labour Party chairperson in the state, Mrs Esther Gulmu Johnson, expressed happiness that the primary election happened without any incident.

She noted that it would put an end to any doubts about the party winning in all elections in the state.
