A police officer, Sergeant Ali Bakwana, has allegedly killed a 65-year-old mother of ten children, Maryam Abdullahi.
The deceased was a resident of Doubeli culvert in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.
An eye witness said, the octogenarian was killed at the entrance of their house at about 9pm yesterday while she was making enquiry over the arrest of her younger son by the police on routine patrol in the area.
LEADERSHIP Weekend gathered that the trigger-happy officer was under the influence of drugs as he shot nine live ammunition at the scene of the incident.
A resident, Sale Karau said, “We picked nine empty bullet shells from the scene and handed them over to the ward head of the area.”
“The police, Bakwana was smoking Indian hemp at the time he shot the old woman.”
It was gathered that a stray bullet also hit a 13-year-old resident of the area who sustained injury but currently lying at home without medical attention due to financial constraints.
The situation threw the area into panic as youths took to the streets protesting the killing, burning tyres.
When contacted, the state police image-maker, SP Suleiman Nguroje was said to in a crucial meeting with the new commissioner of police, Afolabi Babatola Adeniyi.
