The Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Uzor Kalu, on Tuesday, visited President Muhammadu Buhari to inform the latter of his ambition to become the next Senate President in the incoming 10th National Assembly.

Senator Kalu, a former Governor of Abia State, disclosed this via his verified Facebook page shortly after conferring with President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He wrote: “I was received this afternoon by President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) in the State House. It was an honour to present my certificate of return to Mr President and to thank him for the attention he gave Abia North Senatorial District in the last three years. I also intimated Mr President of my intention to run for the office of the Senate President in the 10th National Assembly.”

Also, earlier while speaking with State House Correspondents after meeting the President, Kalu explained the reasons why the South-East deserves the Senate presidency, despite giving few votes to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the just-concluded 2023 presidential election.

Recall that the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, received the least number of votes in the South-East zone during the 2023 presidential election.

According to him, if the Senate presidency is zoned to the region, the South-East will bring peace and unity to the table.

He said that it was not the number of votes that counts, but the unity of the country should be paramount.

Kalu also emphasised that peace is more important than votes.
