The chief executive officer, Ceylon Marine, Chris Ajayi, has disclosed that Nigeria currently has a shortfall of 2.5million tonnes of fish in the country.
Speaking against the backdrop of the plan to launch its refrigerated mini-fishing trawlers with a view to grow the fishery sub-sector of the nation’s economy, Ajayi said Nigeria spend a whooping $1billion on fish importation annually.
According to him, Nigeria currently consume about 3.6million tonnes of Fish annually and 1.1million tonnes are sourced locally.
He, however, disclosed that the refrigerated mini fishing trawlers would go to sea and return within a month with over 13 tonnes of fish.
He said, ‘’there is currently a shortfall of 2.5million tonnes that we are forced to import spending over $1billion on fish importation annually. The Ceylon Mini refrigerated trawler can do over 13 tonnes per month and it’s very fuel efficient and also affordable.”
“We believe strongly that with the deployment of this mini refrigerated trawler in Nigeria, fish import will be history, save foreign exchange and also create a lot of jobs,” Ajayi said.
