Benue State government has directed the authorities of Benue State University, Makurdi to begin investigation into the circumstances surrounding the sudden collapse of the multi-million-naira Faculty of Social Sciences Office/Theatre Complex.
State deputy governor, Engr Benson Abounu, who paid an unscheduled visit to the institution, directed the vice chancellor, Prof. Msugh Kembe to find out the root cause of the collapse.
He further directed the VC to call an urgent meeting of all the parties that took part in the construction work with a view to finding a way of addressing the problem.
“The government cannot afford to lose this kind of project like that, this is most unfortunate,” he said.
He asked the vice chancellor to furnish him with the outcome of the investigations, including contractual obligations.
Professor Kembe, thanked the state government for quickly responding to the disaster and assured that they will carry out the investigations as directed.
The VC informed that already, the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has visited the school, having been informed of the incident.
Our correspondent gathered that the building, which was constructed through TETFUND in 2015 at the cost of N280million collapsed in the early hours of Sunday.
