The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) has cancelled the proposed 5th December 2020 local government council elections to 27 February, 2021.
The Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Mamman Mohammed who revealed this to newsmen in Damaturu said the Commission decided to postpone the elections due to resurgence of Coronavirus pandemic in the state.
Dr. Mamman said the commission has in line with the protocol of COVID-19 as outlined by WHO and NCDC concluded preparations with substantial arrangement for compliance but, the slight resurgence of the pandemic of two new confirmed cases in the state leave them with no option than postponement.
“Our State has recently recorded a slight resurgence of the COVID-19 with the two cases confirmed and after due consultation with critical stakeholders including ministry of health, we are compelled to re-adjust the date of elections to prevent the spread of the disease.
“The need to be proactive in saving one life in Yobe State is compelling and is a cogent reason to reschedule the date of this election in accordance with the law of the elections”.
“Consequently, our local government Councils election earlier scheduled for 5 December, 2020 is hereby shifted to hold on 27 February, 2021,” Mamman disclosed.
He said a new schedule of election activities is being reviewed and will be released very soon assuring that it will provide an armful time for primaries and other election requirements for qualification of candidates.
The Chairman said the government is on top of the situation as the State Ministry of Health has taken positive steps to identify and isolate persons who have been in contact with the incidence cases.
“We are confident that the resurgence of the virus will be contained as it was contained earlier by the committed administration of His Excellency, Hon Mai Mala Buni, and the executive Governor of Yobe State.”
Dr. Mamman appealed to political parties among other stakeholders to appreciate the important development and support the Commission in conducting a successful free, fair and transparent local government elections under COVID-19 OUTBREAK, guidelines and prevention protocol.
