As part of ways to determine the processes and conduct of the governorship election in Edo State, the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, (NILDS) has been selected as one of the domestic observer groups to brief the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Situation room, Abuja on the proceedings of the elections.
The Director- General, Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman in line with the mandate of the institute approved the deployment of its personnel to participate in the elections as Institutional Election Observation Group in the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States.
According to a statement from the Institute, the (INEC) Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu will be calling to gain the Institute’s insights and observations on the process on Election Day.
Recall that (NILS) Amendment Act, 2018, section2 (j) empowers the Institute to observe elections and section 2(l) of the (NILS) principal Act as amended empowers it to sensitize the Nigerian public to imbibe, support and defend democratic and legislative ethics.
This is not the first time NILDS is participating in the Observation of Elections in Nigeria; the premier institution actively participated as observers during the 2015 and 2019 General Elections as well as the Bayelsa, Ekiti and Kogi states elections and submitted its observations and recommendations to INEC.
