The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Beunique clothing line, Nseobong Akpan, a premium fashion brand in Nigeria has described fashion as art, citing other elements that compliment fashion as a form of artistic expression.
According to her, “Fashion is like art…. you can express yourself through it and different people will appreciate it differently so just look good and live your life.” Of course, when she talks fashion and style, people in the know do pretty much else than listen. In a recent chat with our reporter, she gave some insights concerning fashion and style and how they are related but not same in substance and meaning.
“ Of course, you can separate one from the other, style is very personal, it has nothing to do with fashion, fashion is over quickly, fashion is a constantly changing sequence of trends whereas style is something a lot more permanent and isn’t subject to changing on a whim in the way that fashion is susceptible to,” she said.
“For me, I think fashion is a form of saying who you are without having to introduce yourself. The way you appear matters a lot, it can quickly tell someone who you are and your personality, she added. Beyond being a form of art Nseobong believes fashion in the form of clothing is essential to life just like the air we breathe. And she believes that beauty and sexiness can be magnified by appropriate fashion sense. “They all work hand in hand, fashion accentuates these areas in a way that the most fashionable you are brings out the beauty, style and sexiness in you, fashion accentuate them all. For me, less of following trends and knowing what fits the unique me and what I am comfortable in, being stylish in my true self is what defines my sense of style,” she said. Reminiscing about how she started the Beunique boss said the brand was a product of dream and determination. It wasn’t all about a great plan, it happened rather spontaneously from her passion about fashion and taste for classy couture.
“Our growth rate to me is something I am forever grateful for. As a young girl from a really small city that came to this huge city of Lagos with nothing but dreams and determination, I’ll say I’m proud to have achieved all I have as it’s not been easy at all. From a small room in Jakande with less than one thousand followers to a massive store in Oniru Estate,” she stated.
Nseobong Akpan was born in the late 90s and celebrates her birthday December 2nd of every year. She started as a mere clothing merchant, buying and selling clothes before blossoming into a fashion consultant.
The Akwa Ibom lady runs Beunique full time but has a substantial stake in real estate. She’s an entrepreneur and also a brand influencer with her brand as her major focus.
She also consults for brands, mostly people who run clothing businesses that need guidance on trends and all. She does private styling too and consult for individuals and companies into fashion.
