Akwa Ibom State governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has commended officers and men of the Nigerian Army for tackling the nation’s security challenges.
Governor Emmanuel made the commendation in his keynote address at the opening ceremony of the 3rd Inter Nigerian Air Force Combat Sports Competition tagged, “Uyo 2018,” held yesterday at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
Emmanuel, who commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their untiring efforts, praised them for hosting the event in the state.
“I want to use this opportunity to commend the Nigerian Armed Forces for their gallant efforts to ensure that they confront the security threats facing the nation especially the menace of some miscreants we are experiencing in the Niger Delta.
“We remain eternally grateful and thank you immensely for your services to the nation. We hope you will continue in this service as it has always been. There is no way you can be good military officer without challenging yourself for proper fitness exercise”, he said.
Declaring the event open, the special guest of honour and governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade said the competition was organised to inculcate core values of the force.
The governor who was represented by his deputy, Prof Ivara Esu, added that the competition would keep air force personnel fit especially in this period of security challenges.
He assured that the federal government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, would continue to ensure the safety of Nigeria and Nigerians.
He urged the Nigerian Armed Forces to rise up and tackle the security threats plaguing the nation, assuring that the government of Cross River would continue to offer all necessary support and assistance to the Nigerian Air Force.
Ayade commended the Akwa Ibom State government for constructing standard sporting facilities that is acceptable by the whole country.
Earlier in his address, the chief of air staff (CAS), Air vice Marshal Sadiq Abubakar said the Nigerian Air Force would continue to train its personnel to be combat ready by ensuring that they are mentally and physically prepared.
He warned his officers and men not to be distracted into politicisation of security issues in the country especially in the social media.
“I wish to reassure all Nigerians that the NAF is fully committed to the successful execution of its constitutional roles and will continue to meet its statutory responsibilities of defending the territorial integrity of the nation. The constitution of Nigeria has clearly assigned role to us, the service will continue to work hard to ensure that our people and communities are secured”, he said,
He said that the NAF would continue to work with other security agencies by ensuring that no group attempts to take over the constitutional mandate given to them.
The chief of air staff said that the 3rd edition of the competition was part of measures to ensure that the personnel were in sound mind and body ready to defend the territorial integrity of the nation.
He urged contingents to take the competition serious as such would help them to perform their tasks effectively and efficiently.
