Two fire Incidents, which led to the loss of properties worth millions of naira, were recorded in parts of Rivers State in less than 24 hours, due to the activities of illegal bunkering activities.
The first incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday at Elele Town in Ikwerre local government area of Rivers State, razing down several shops on that lane and cars, some of the shops were locked with goods inside.
The fire incident at Elele Town also extended to the residential houses in the area and burnt several properties since there was no fire service agencies to quench the fire on time.
Residents of the town, who are mostly traders, disclosed that the cause of the fire incident was as a result of bunker-ing activities in the area.
The second fire incident occurred late Sunday night at the popular Gambia junction, along Ikwerre road in Port Har-court, leading to the loss of properties worth millions of naira.
Residents of the area disclosed that the incident, which occurred around 11:00pm, emanated from stored illegally bunkered petroleum products.
Meanwhile, Chairman of Ikwerre local government area of Rivers State, Hon. Samuel Nwanosike, yesterday visited the scene of the Elele fire incident.
Speaking at the scene of the incident, Nwanosike, who commiserated with victims of the inferno, said the fire out-break was another wakeup-call on his administration to facilitate the setting up of a fire station.
He said, “Let me use this opportunity to commiserate with you, people of Elele, for this great damage. But one thing I can assure the people of Ikwerre Local Government that our efforts to set up our own fire station, this is another call for us to do it quickly.
“And we will do everything in our power to make sure Ikwerre Local Government will have her own fire station to be able to cater for incidents like this.”
