The Jigawa State Executive Council has approved a new minimum pension of ₦20,000 per month for state and local government retirees, raising the benchmark from ₦12,000 as part of efforts to improve the welfare of pensioners.

The State Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Sagir Musa, announced the decision while briefing journalists after the Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Umar Namadi.

He said Governor Namadi had approved the implementation of the new pension package with effect from July 1, 2026.

According to the commissioner, the review underscores the administration’s commitment to improving the living conditions of retired public servants in recognition of their contributions to the development of the state.

To support the implementation, the council also approved an additional ₦2.068 billion annual allocation to the State and Local Government Contributory Pension Scheme.

Musa explained that the extra funding would ensure the full implementation of the new minimum pension and facilitate the prompt payment of retirement benefits.

He added that the move would also boost the confidence and productivity of workers still in active service by assuring them of a secure retirement.

The Executive Council further approved the award of a ₦2.136 billion contract for the solar-powered electrification of four public health facilities—Birnin Kudu General Hospital, Ringim General Hospital, Kazaure Specialist Hospital and Bulangu Cottage Hospital.

According to the commissioner, the project is aimed at providing reliable electricity to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve access to quality and affordable medical services across the state.
