LEADERSHIP Editorial Policy

LEADERSHIP is not a regional or sectional paper. It is a national newspaper, symbolically embedded in the nation’s capital, Abuja. It was founded on 1 October 2004 as a weekly publication and transitioned to a daily on 1 October 2006.

Mission

LEADERSHIP’s mission is to stand for what is right, for good governance, and to defend the interests of Nigeria, even against its leaders. In this pursuit, the newspaper owes no allegiance to any political party, regional bloc, or religious organisation. It is, however, irrevocably committed to the ideals of liberal democracy, the promotion of human rights, credible and transparent leadership, and the defence of Nigeria’s unity and sovereignty.

Our Motto

The LEADERSHIP motto reflects its commitment to higher service: ‘For God and Country!’

Such audiences include:

Policymakers in the public and private sectors, and civil society; Nigerians seeking to understand the direction their country is headed; Nigerians in the diaspora trying to keep abreast of happenings at home and Foreigners interested in Nigeria

Why We Do What We Do

LEADERSHIP believes that good governance serves as a catalyst for a safe and secure society and a thriving private sector. While we believe in the principle of free enterprise, we hold that the state must exercise regulatory control to protect the interests of the citizenry and ensure they are not denied the basic necessities of life.

We oppose all forms of subjugation of individual rights and will raise our pen to defend and promote the rights of the vulnerable and defenceless segments of society.

LEADERSHIP remains unwavering in its advocacy for justice and fairness in the distribution of public resources and in promoting the rule of law for a just and sane society.

We also believe that Nigeria’s engagement with the international community must be guided by its cardinal obligation to ensure a safe and meaningful life for its citizens.

Principles That Guide Us

Accuracy: We diligently interrogate reports to ascertain their veracity before publication. However, where errors occur, we swiftly correct them.

Independence: Our editorial judgement is driven solely by journalistic values, free from commercial, political, or sectional influence. We are not aligned with any political party, ethnic group, religious body, or special interest.

Balance: We strive to present a broad range of viewpoints and deliver balanced reporting, ensuring all subjects are treated fairly and within proper context.

Public Good: We prioritise information the public needs, advancing Nigeria’s collective interests while respecting the integrity and sovereignty of the Federation.

Justice and Accountability: We advocate justice and accountability in public life and will unapologetically hold leaders to account on these values.

Equality: We advocate the equal application and protection of all citizens under Nigerian law. No citizen is above the law.
