The controversial response in the aftermath of Malam Mamman Daura’s advise to Nigerian Political Gladiators on a way forward in the looming 2023 presidential election should not be taken for granted or subsequently brushed under the carpet with bad faith.
Malam Mamman Daura, a highly respected leader and a man of few words which at its expense must be given special attention to. The reason being, in order to project an adequate and sufficient concept that will aid the country to propel forward, critical analysis should be given to the systematic structure of Nigerian political scene. Therefore, Mamman Daura advice should not be undermined.
We hear agitations, projections and affirmations being suggested towards a sustainable solution to the Political crisis faced in Nigeria, but yet one finds it onerous to grasp a way the South can benefit from these laudable suggestions in a more profound way which will be agreeable to unite the South.
In respect of the upcoming Presidential election, I am tolling the line of all active politicians that are working so hard behind the scene towards the election; not social media politicians, idle commentators and all the toothless bull dogs ranting without a concrete plan to holistically endear their people to a mapped out agenda for the South and to have the opportunity to have one voice for the Southern Minorities, the Igbos and the Yorubas.
2023 is a year that will usher in unprecedented challenges in terms of who succeeds President Buhari and It is highly doubtable if Buhari will choose a successor and impose on Nigerians like General Obasanjo did.
The foremost hullabaloos has been various regions out cry to produce a President from within its jurisdiction. However, projecting a Tribal President without enough Votes within to win election for the candidate cannot be without consulting with other Tribes and Regions.
So far, Regions are adopting individualistic strategy clustered with different political opinions to produce their regional candidate which will subsequently create an avenue for an underdog or puppet to be presented with a golden ticket without regards to National interest..
Failing to heed to the advise of Malam Mamman Daura’s advice may result in Regions or tribes losing out and they will only have themselves to blame. Moreover, things will fall asunder and in the absence of a remedy to propel forward, many may end up taking backward steps just as the Igbos lost out with their alleged plan to take total control in 1964 which transpired to be a consequential disaster..
Although, it is highly anticipated that we are likely to face an unconventional approach towards 2023 elections. This could be attributable to various reasons:
For instance, all the political zones and some Tribes in the Southern Region, are prioritising to produce a President with the hope of being represented and their voices to be heard.
Accordingly, the South East in Alliance with their South South Igbo extraction, are projecting that they must be next on line on the grounds that they have
not been tasted the Power since the aftermath of the civil war.
On the other side of the spectrum, the BRAC Aborigines of the Niger Delta Coastal Region which comprises of Bayelsa,Rivers, Akwa ibom, Cross River States are alluding to the fact that they produce 73% of the Nation Resources, also feeling shortchanged as they were denied the opportunity to choose a candidate to represent them as president and also they were denied the opportunity to complete the mandatory two terms that was favoured to other major Tribes.
The South West are coming out with a louder voice and dominating the Political space in the South, one tends to wonder why? After all, they have consistently produced a President for eight years and a Vice President for another eight years by 2023. Well, their position may be attributed to their Political role to the victory of All progressives congress in 2015, but it has no national benefit..
The former midwestern Region being ally with South West in politics, may have their in-house differences but they seem to have a common political interest outwardly
Right now, we have three major Southern blocks all showing strong interest in the Presidential race in 2023.
The South Western Region, The South East Igbos and their South South extractions and the emerging new block being the Oil and Gas Rich Region of the BRAC States.(Bayelsa,Rivers, Akwa ibom and Cross River State).
For the South to be taken seriously they must emulate the North by projecting a Southern President which will represent the South on a national political platform.
The North is saying, we have the votes and since 1999 democratic dispensation , we have been giving the South our votes to rule, the South has ruled for fourteen years while the North has ruled for 10 years. It will be unfair to give out their support to the South again, this time around we are ready for a free for all participation for the Presidency.
Politically, the North is far ahead the South and the loophole is the lack of unity amongst the Southerners hence the Northerners tend to dominate in Political Leadership.
The Ace being, the North always agitate for a Northern President without regional favouritism of North West, North East etc; Something the South fails to emulate.
The South must agree on one candidate be it igbo, Yoruba or BRAC Coastal Region. And not clamour for a Southern President, with a Tripodal Tribal and Zonal interest.
The advise of Mallam Mammon Daura may not be an outright eureka for a Southern President, but it could be a gamble worth a trial. After all, once upon a time, a Southerner Alhaji Moshod Abiola defeated Alhaji Bashir Tofa a Northerner, Tofa was equally defeated by Abiola in Kano, Tofa State.
Who knows ? maybe that same feat could be repeated.
This was the opportunity the elder statesman was insinuating, the best candidate should contest irrespective of ethnicity.
One must not misconstrue Mallam mamman Daura’s message as completely laying Zonal arrangement to rest, but a rather one off introductory trial based on the heated interest in 2023 Presidential race where all the Regions in Nigeria are interested to participate.
The Elder Statesman with his wealth of experience, is calling for a truce to calm the precarious situation he envisages come 2023 thereby calling for all Regions to sheath their sword and allow individual Aspirants to crisscross across the Country to Consult, horse trade, network for a Nation wide spread support based on showcasing their profile of integrity, Capability and the prowess of the candidates .
