Mooro Bridge Collapse Isolates 20 Communities In Kwara, Oyo Despite ₦1.2bn Allocation

The Mooro Bridge, a critical link connecting more than 20 communities across Kwara State and Oyo State, has collapsed, leaving residents stranded and raising fresh concerns over the utilisation of about ₦1.2 billion reportedly allocated for the project.

The latest collapse, said to have been triggered by heavy rainfall, has paralysed movement along the axis, forcing commuters and motorists to seek longer and riskier alternative routes.

A viral video circulating online shows what appears to be a temporary structure that gave way, while an incomplete bridge stands adjacent, suggesting ongoing but stalled construction work.

The failed infrastructure has further worsened an already dire situation, as residents accuse authorities of abandoning the project despite years of budgetary provisions.

Findings indicate that construction of a permanent bridge, reportedly awarded between 2017 and 2018, has suffered prolonged delays. In the absence of a completed structure, motorists have continued to rely on the old, vulnerable crossing.

The development has effectively cut off access to over 20 communities, disrupting economic activities and affecting mobility for commuters, including students of Kwara State University.

Local transporters, who have repeatedly decried the state of the bridge, staged protests over the recurring collapses and the hardship imposed on road users.

Community leaders and local government officials have also called for urgent intervention by the Federal Ministry of Works to compel contractors to return to the site and complete a durable, long-lasting structure.

Residents say the repeated collapse of the bridge, particularly during the rainy season, underscores the need for accountability and timely execution of public infrastructure projects.
