Tthe newly elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has held a meeting with the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State.

The meeting followed the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa as Lagos Assembly speaker and her subsequent emergence as the new Speaker on January 13.

Obasa was removed over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of power. Meranda, who previously served as Deputy Speaker under Obasa, was elected to replace him.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Meranda explained that the purpose of her meeting with the GAC was to provide updates on the recent leadership changes in the Assembly and to seek the council’s support.

“It was to brief them about what happened at the House of Assembly yesterday and to seek their blessings, which we have,” Meranda said.

The leadership shakeup came months after Obasa and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu met with the GAC in October 2023, following tensions between the executive and legislative arms of government.

At the time, the State Assembly had declined to confirm 17 out of the 39 commissioner-nominees submitted by the governor, sparking concerns over strained relationships between the two branches of government.
