The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), recorded over 100 per cent increase in passenger volume on the on Lagos –Osogbo and Lagos-Zaria rail service during the Eid-El- Kabir celebration
The NRC provided passenger and freight train service on the narrow gauge railway line from Iddo and Ebute-Metta Junction to Osogbo and Zaria while China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), in collaboration with NRC provided passenger train service on the Standard gauge rail track from Bola Ahmed Tinubu train terminal at Apapa to Obafemi Awolowo train terminal at Moniya in Oyo State during the holiday period.
LEADERSHIP findings showed that passengers especially indigenes of Osun State enjoyed the annual (2021) free Sallah train ride introduced by former governor of the State and current Interior minister, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and sustained by present governor Oyetola from Iddo to Osogbo on Monday.
The free passenger train already paid for by the Osun State government departed Iddo at about 12.noon and arrived Osogbo in the night.
Passengers on board the train commended the state government for giving them the opportunity to travel home to celebrate Eid-el-kabir with their families and loved ones.
The managing director First Fit Nigeria Limited, Mr. Eric Umezurike said the passenger train service from Iddo to Osogbo was seamless without any breakdown as was the case in the past whereby passengers had to drop down from the train to look for alternative means of transport when the train broke down at Bodija in Oyo state in 2019.
The twice daily Lagos to Ibadan standard gauge passenger train service operated during the Sallah holiday at rates ranging from economy class -N2,500, Business class-N5,000 and First Class-N6,000 only.
LEADERSHIP findings showed that more passengers thronged Ebute-Metta Junction which was named after late Mobolaji Johnson, Bola Ahmed Tinubu train terminal and Moniya railway station named after Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo to enter the train to and from Lagos to Ibadan and back respectively.
The freight train service on the narrow gauge also conveyed water pipes from Ebute-Metta Junction to Zaria on behalf of the Kaduna state government for its pipe borne water project during the Sallah period.
