***Delta Gov May Head Convention Committee –
The intrigues surrounding the national chairmanship tussle of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is assuming new twist as some Northern interest in the party are insisting that the position must be micro-zoned to the South-west.
This comes as the Delta State governor, Sen Ifeanyi Okowa, may head the party’s national convention committee, scheduled to hold on December 9.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) which is holding today is expected to approved the recommendations of Makarfi-led leadership on preparation for the convention which includes the choice of chairman for the convention.
NEC is also expected to deliberate on some thorny issues ahead of the convention of the party which bother on the delegate list and waiver for returnees.
A source in the PDP told LEADERSHIP that some northern elders are insisting that the chairmanship of the party must be zoned to the South west.
It was learnt that the Northern elders are planning to hold a meeting where they will make the declaration and urge the Sen Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee to abide by the decision.
It was however learnt that the Makarfi team has refused to adopt micro-zoning the chairmanship position to the South-west.
The Source said ” the elders from the North are moving to have a meeting where they will insist that the national chairmanship of the party must be micro-zoned to the South west.
“But Makarfi who is also likely to attend the meeting is insisting that the micro-zoning of the position to the South west will not be adopted by the party”, the source added.
The source also disclosed that moves to ensure that the voting procedure at the convention is done on a state by state basis has been opposed by some aspirants in the party.
It was also learnt that the choice of Sen Okowa as chairman of the committee is attracting objection from some chairmanship aspirants of the party.
It was gathered that governors of Gombe Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwambo or Akwa Ibom States, Udom Emmanuel, were also listed to head the national convention committee.
It was learnt that some party members are lobbying for the committee to be headed by a Northern governor because the high point of the event is the emergence of a chairman who will come from the Southern part of the country.
It will be recalled that some chairmanship aspirants had raised objections over the composition of the committee for the ward and congress delegates, alleging that it was tilted to favor an aspirant in the race.
It was also gathered that the NEC will deliberate on the issues arising from observations made over the composition of the convention committee.
