In line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris to mop up fire arms, the Benue state police command has warned those still in possession of illegal firearms whether licensed or not to willingly surrender them to appropriate authority or face arrest and prosecution.
The commissioner of police,Fatai Owoseni disclosed this in Makurdi while speaking to newsmen during the display of some of the recovered arms at the police headquarters Makurdi.
The commissioner said attention of the police was now focused on the prohibited fire arms as stipulated in the fire arms act and other weapons that fall within the category of firearms.
The commissioner explained that 46 different types of fire arms were recovered across the state, ranging from four AK47 guns, magazines, locally and english made pistols,126 live ammunitions and 5 cartridges.
According to him, a standing taskforce has been put together through the directives of the IGP and the command is working assiduously in strengthening it to be more effective and appealed to those still holding illegal weapons to willingly surrender them, saying the law does not recognize taking to self help.
While emphasizing that the police will redouble their efforts in visibility policing,Owoseni however warned those in the habit of covering number plates, improvised tinted glasses, revolve light and sirens to desist henceforth or face arrest no matter how highly placed.

For every vehicle that is on the road it’s registration number plate must be displayed,”he warned.
In another development, the police said it has arrested a notorious armed robbery gang leader terrorising commuters along Makurdi- Aliade – Gboko road.
The commissioner of police, who barred journalists from interviewing the suspect however, explained that this was to enable them complete their investigation, saying parading the suspect for interview will amount to jeopardizing the ongoing investigation, which the suspects is givinh useful information that will lead to arrest of others.
