The public enlightenment system of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC) has helped in the arrests of over 190 suspects at the North -East zone from the month of January to date.
The head of operation of the zonal office, Aminu Ado Aliyu, disclosed this in Gombe, while briefing news on the achievements of the commission.
He said in the course of investigating the cases, the commission also recovered the sum of over N110 million in cash and in draft. “We have also recovered the sum of N79,074, 743.53 in draft and cash of N31,745,280, summing up to N110, 820, 023.53 from cases under investigation. ”
According to him the commission has secured 7 convictions, while more convictions are still being awaited, with 54 cases under prosecution.
He said the commission activities is not restricted with ridding the society of economic and financial crimes by sending criminals to jail, but also forestall crime by alerting and sensitising the public on the modus operandi of fraudsters through the media.
Aliyu said it was as a result of the public enlightenment program, that some good Samaritans volunteered information which led to cracking some syndicates that specialised in fertilizer adulteration, petroleum products adulteration and palm oil adulteration which would have caused not only great financial loses but endangering the lives of consumers.
The zonal boss then encouraged members of the public to help provide useful information to the commission in order to help fight crimes.
“Our doors are opened and I am encouraging all of you to come forward and report any suspected financial crime being perpetrated within the society with a view to getting rid of this cancer called corruption. ” He said.
