Thomas Otu eased to a 6-1, 6-4 win over Ismaila Sikiru to move to the second round of the Rainoil Tennis Open holding at the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja.
Otu, who emerged Men’s singles champion of the Dala Hard Court held recently in Kano, showed some flashes of brilliance as he dominated the match which lasted just under an hour.
He is joined in the second round by 2018 ITF Junior Circuit winner, Christopher Bulus who was ruthless in the 6-0, 6-0 bashing of Ojo Oyelami. Micheal Osewa, another junior international came from a set down to upset Ikechukwu Iloputa 0-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Also second seed, Joseph Imeh was given a tough test by Nonso Madueke before triumphing 7-5, 6-4 as he hopes to go a step better after losing in the final at Dala while Henry Atseye had a easy passage to the second round by beating Amos Michael 6-1, 6-1.
In the men’s doubles, Abdulmumin Babalola, who paired Lawal Shehu to win the Dala title few weeks ago in Kano, endured a torrid game as his combination with Abdulganiyu Salami were edged by Christian Paul and Linus Paul 4-6, 6-3, 8-10.
Old war horses Sunday Maku and John Otu paired well to advance to the next round with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Samsn Adewale and Tosin Akinwunm just as Sylvester Emmanuel and Clifford Enosoregbe triumphed 6-4, 6-4 over Sikiru Ismaila and Sola Alalade.
In the Women’s singles, Serena Teluwo had a baptism of fire to her debut in the senior tournament as she was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Rose Abu. The 11-year-old who represented Nigeria at the African Junior Championship in Morocco last September could not withstand the experience of her opponent.
Lolade Holmes and Oiza Yakubu, two junior players that are also making their first appearances at senior level were beaten 6-3, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1 by Blessing Anuna and Bukola Olowu.
EKiti state top female tennis player, Omolaya Bamidele was also on top ofher game as she coasted to a comprehensive 6-0, 6-0 win over Olamide Aluko, another player debuting at the senior level.
Prime seed, Sarah Adegoke made light work of Ramota Odeyemi to qualify to the second round with a 6-0, 6-0 win just as Ronke Akingbade sent Stella Udokwu packing with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Omotayo Osewa rallied to beat Racheal Aduoye 5-7, 6-3 6-4.
