‘Sports Festival Will Revamp Traditional Sports’

The Chairman, FCT Association of Traditional Sports, Apostle Collins Ebubechukwu has said that the forthcoming National Sports Festival will help revamp traditional sports in the country. 

Speaking with LEADERSHIP sports, Ebubechukwu stressed the need to develop the nation’s local sports.

“We want to develop our local sports like Ayo so that our children can know what we inherited from our parents so it doesn’t go extinct,” he said

Ayo is a traditional game played on a carved wooden board usually played between two persons, and the objects of play being ayo seeds.The game is very common in Nigeria.

He added that the newly elected board will embark on grassroots development programmes within the nation’s capital in a bid to bring the games to the spotlight.

“We will go to schools to organise local competitions so that they would have the foundation from there the world will have to know about such sports,” he added.

Ahead of the National Sports Festival which is scheduled to commence from December 6th -16th, 2018 at the Abuja National Stadium, Ebubechukwu  is expressed that team FCT will be going out for the gold medals in the 19th Edition of the Games as Ayo, Abula, traditional boxing, traditional wrestling and Langa have all been confirmed for the sports festival.

  The 2 finalists will represent Nigeria at the 2018 FIBA Africa Women Club Championship.
