A little over a year after the Russia – Ukraine war began, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has commended the efforts of the International Legion in his country’s war again Russia.

February 24, 2023, marked one year since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, igniting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.

According to President Zelensky, when Putin launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he was expecting a brief and triumphant campaign that would extinguish Ukrainian independence and secure his place in Russian history amongst greatest rulers.

He said one year on, it is now clear that the decision to invade was one of the biggest mistakes by Russian president, Vladimir Putin.

“The strength and tenacity of Ukraine’s national resistance has stunned whole world and made a mockery of Putin claims to be “returning historic Russian lands”, he said.

“On February 27, 2022, just two days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for “friends of Ukraine, freedom and democracy” to volunteer for the Ukrainian Territorial Defense forces.

“Just two weeks after Zelensky asked foreigners to serve in the Ukrainian “international legion”, Ukraine announced that more than 20,000 foreign volunteers from over 52 different countries had arrived.
