Ten-man West Ham United scraped into the FA Cup fifth round after Crysencio Summerville’s extra-time winner secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory at League One side Burton Albion on Saturday.
Nuno EspÃrito Santo’s side were pushed all the way by their lower-league opponents, with Summerville finally breaking the deadlock in extra time, notching his sixth goal in his last seven appearances across all competitions.
West Ham’s Freddie Potts was shown a red card shortly after Summerville’s strike in the first period of extra-time, but the Premier League strugglers held firm to survive a gruelling fourth-round encounter.
With the Hammers languishing three points from safety in the Premier League, their erratic performance will do little to quell fans’ anxieties about their top-flight survival prospects.
During the match, West Ham supporters flew a plane over the Pirelli Stadium with a banner calling for David Sullivan and Karen Brady to sell the club, while chants of “sack the board” echoed from within the ground.
Despite recent improvements in form, including three wins from their last five league games and a draw against Manchester United on Tuesday, Nuno made ten changes, clearly prioritising their Premier League survival bid.
With both West Ham and Burton occupying relegation spots in their respective divisions, a significant 47 places separated the two teams in the English football pyramid. However, West Ham’s start was sluggish, failing to register a touch in the Burton penalty area for the opening 20 minutes.
They were tested early on by Tyrese Shade’s low drive, which forced a fine save from West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. It took 37 minutes for West Ham to register their first shot, a Callum Wilson curler comfortably held by Bradley Collins.
West Ham showed slight improvement after the interval. Collins was forced to save a towering Konstantinos Mavropanos header before tipping a powerful Wilson effort over the bar. Soungoutou Magassa was also denied by Collins before West Ham finally made the breakthrough five minutes into extra-time.
In a contest largely devoid of inspiration, Summerville provided a moment of magic, embarking on a dynamic run down the left flank before unleashing a deflected strike from the edge of the box that flew into the top corner.
West Ham substitute Potts was then dismissed in the 101st minute for a reckless lunge on Julian Larsson. Burton’s Jack Armer and Kyran Lofthouse both squandered late chances to force a penalty shoot-out, allowing West Ham to cling on for the win.
