No fewer than 11,000 children from nomadic schools are to benefit from free uniforms and other learning materials to be distributed by the Jigawa State government.

Governor Umar Namadi revealed this while speaking at the launch of the 2026 free school uniform and learning materials initiative, along with sanitary kits aimed at encouraging parents to send their children to school, strengthening school enrolment and retention, and addressing the high rate of out-of-school children.

At the occasion, held at Girls’ Science Secondary School, Jahun, Governor Namadi stated that a total of 48,300 school uniforms, 15,000 school bags, 40,000 sanitary pads, 4,000 sets of writing materials, and 40,000 exercise books would be distributed to female students at the post-basic level across the state.

He noted that, in addition, the government has concluded arrangements and awarded contracts for the supply of similar educational support materials at the basic education level.

“This includes 22,500 sets of school uniforms for Junior Secondary Schools and 11,000 sets of school uniforms for nomadic schools, in addition to other learning-support items such as school bags, sandals, school boxes, and exercise books.

“This means that our intervention will not stop at the post-basic level.

It will reach younger learners early enough to strengthen enrolment, retention, and transition from basic to post-basic education.

“These items were selected to meet real needs in our schools, reduce the burden on parents, and support regular attendance and improved learning outcomes among our girls.

“I have directed the relevant agencies to ensure transparency, proper targeting, and timely distribution so that the materials reach the intended beneficiaries across our communities,” the governor stated.

In his speech at the occasion, the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof Yusif Isah Champ, stated that the intervention was part of the Jigawa State government’s policy of free education for the girl child from primary to tertiary institutions.

He noted that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Namadi, is investing heavily to promote girls’ child education, improve access to education for all children, and enhance learning outcomes in the state.

“The Namadi administration’s commitment to repositioning the state’s education sector can be seen through the state’s annual budget, in which education always receives the lion’s share, and also through how the community and general public are encouraged to take ownership of the education sector,” Prof Champ stated.
