Not fewer than 12 armed bandits have been neutralised by security agents with stolen livestock and weapons recovered in Kurfi-Safana local government area of Katsina State.
Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs in the state, Dr. Nasiru Mua’zu, in a statement on Wednesday, said the operation was launched in response to an early morning attack on Rahamawa Village, located in the Kuraye District of Charanchi local government area.
Mua’zu said the assailants stormed the community around 5:40am, injuring a 60-year-old Alhaji Danmalam, and rustling 22 cattle.
Acting swiftly on intelligence reports, a combined team comprising the operatives of the Nigeria Police, Army, Community Watch Corps, and local vigilantes pursued the fleeing bandits to Dutsen Falale within the Kurfi-Safana enclave where a fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in the death of the twelve suspected bandits.
Mua’zu added that security forces also recovered five AK-47 rifles, several rounds of ammunition, and successfully retrieved all stolen 22 cattle.
However, while commending the bravery and dedication of the security personnel involved, Dr. Mua’zu expressed deep sorrow over the death of one vigilante member, Alhaji Danmalam, who lost his life in the gun battle.
Additionally, one soldier sustained injuries and currently receiving treatment.
Alhaji Danmalam succumbed to his injuries from the gun battle at the Primary Health Care Centre in Charanchi.
“On behalf of His Excellency, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, and the good people of Katsina State, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and pray for Allah’s mercy upon their souls,” the statement read.
The commissioner reiterated the state government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
He disclosed that investigations were ongoing to track down other fleeing suspects and dismantle remaining criminal hideouts in the area.
Residents have also been urged to continue supporting security efforts by providing timely information on suspicious activities.
