13 COVID-19 Patients Died In Benue, Says CMD

The management of Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Makurdi, Benue State has disclosed that 13  of the over 380 COVID-19 patients brought to the facility since the outbreak of the pandemic died as a result of complications and attributed the low death rate it to effective service delivery by the medical team.

TThe chief medical director of FMC, Dr. Peteru Inunduh, saidt for effective treatment of patients with infectious or viral diseases such as COVID-19, 80 metric tonnes of oxygen-generating plant has installed to ensure constant supply of oxygen to patients idaily in the 30-bed space at the infectious unit of the newly constructed Disease Care Centre.

Inuduh disclosed this when he conducted journalists alongside Dr Enye Agada round some of the projects executed in the past eight years of his tenure as the CMD of FMC.

He said the 80 metric tonnes of oxygen-generating plant  is also servicing all the hospitals in Benue and some neighbouring states.

According to him, “The Isolation Centre which is my pet project comprised a  sitting arena for patients awaiting discharge  inorder not to be bored as well as a morgue where corpses of patients who cannot make it would be deposited without endangering the lives of other patients so that the safe burial team can evacuate the corpses through the back exit for burial.”

The CMD also disclosed that he has also constructed and equipped a Research Molecular Laboratory which will be used in diagnosing infectious diseases such as Lassa fever, COVID-19, Hepatitis among others, adding that the presence of the Lab will stop the movement of samples and patients to other States for diagnosis.

“In order not to delay patients who are under emergency, i have also constructed the Main Theater within the hospital with Four operation suits, this means different surgeries can be carried out simultaneously in the same theatre by different surgery teams to save lives,” he said.

Inuduh said for effective management of waste to avert disease outbreak, especially from infectious disease, the CMD has also installed a 200kg incinerator unit for proper waste disposal for the safety of patients and staff in the facility.

Other projects executed by the outgoing CMD, includes, construction of access road, Intensive Care unit, walk ways, water treatment plant in Dialysis unit, Endoscopy suits landscaping among others within the facility.

He commended all staff of FMC especially the medical personnel for their support, saying in the area of service delivery they have done well.
